A deep commitment to mauritian hospitality

Apr 19, 2024

"Every day in the hotel industry is a constant challenge," smiles Ludovic Lagesse, General Manager of the Hennessy Park Hotel, as he reflects on the complexities of his profession. Just as he finishes his sentence, his phone rings. A hotel guest has fallen ill. "Excuse me, I need to check on this. I’ll be back as soon as possible," he says, rushing out of the room. He returns moments later. "Everything is under control. It reminds me that we are like a grand theatre production where every link, every team member, plays a crucial role."

Since taking office on February 12, 2024, Ludovic Lagesse has revealed a career marked by passion and an unwavering love for the hospitality industry. He shares his story, childhood dreams, and aspirations for the future of this iconic establishment.

"Since I was a child, I have always wanted to work in the hotel industry," he confesses, his gaze filled with nostalgia. "At first, I dreamed of becoming a Chef, but through my internships, I realized that my true passion lay in guest service—the very heart of hospitality."

Recalling his early days in the kitchen, Ludovic shares a defining experience at Le Grand Gaube Hotel in 1994. "The kitchen felt like a full-scale factory, which did not align with my romanticized vision of a fine-dining restaurant." However, hospitality had always been part of his life, with an uncle working at Paradis and Dina Robin hotels, where he spent much of his childhood.

Ludovic completed his first real internship at the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel 25 years ago before continuing his studies at Vatel in France, earning a BSc in Hospitality Management and a university diploma from the University of Perpignan. His professional journey began at Le Royal Luxembourg Hotel, where he climbed the ranks from Chef Steward to F&B Manager. He also played a key role in opening several branches. Returning to Mauritius in 2008, he embarked on an exciting adventure with the Trimetys Group as Managing Director. Fourteen years later, he sought new horizons by joining Mon Choisy Group, where he spent a year as Group Head of Operations. Now, he has returned to his first love, joining Ninety-Six Hotel Collection, the very group where his hospitality journey began.

"What sets Hennessy Park Hotel apart is its deep-rooted Mauritian cultural DNA," he emphasizes. "We provide a platform for local artists to express themselves. The hotel, nestled in the heart of Ebène, becomes a vibrant melting pot, connecting people from all walks of life."

His commitment here builds on the foundation laid before him. "I intend to bring my personal touch, aligned with the values of the Eclosia Group, Ninety-Six, and Hennessy’s ambitions. Adapting to market demands and continuous improvement are essential."

When asked about the challenges of recruiting young talent, Ludovic reflects seriously. "The hospitality industry must adapt to a new generation with a different approach to work. The declining attractiveness of our professions calls for a redefinition of our approach and better work-life balance management." The labor shortage is a global crisis linked to the sector’s demanding perception. He praises Ninety-Six Group's initiative to grant employees two consecutive days off—a practice established in Europe for over 20 years.

Ludovic highlights future challenges, such as the need to train the workforce to maintain high service standards. He also discusses productivity issues and the importance of internal coordination.

Outside of his professional life, Ludovic is passionate about fishing, water sports, and literature—he even considers himself a "Sunday handyman." "These activities offer me essential balance, an escape into nature, and a deep connection with my creativity."

Determined to successfully navigate the challenges of the hospitality industry, Ludovic concludes: "We face obstacles, but every challenge is an opportunity to grow and innovate. My goal is to make Hennessy Park Hotel a place where emotion and excellence meet, offering every visitor a truly memorable experience."
